MBCH Children and Family Ministries
Family Resource Development
The Family Resource Development unit at MBCH Children and Family Ministries contracts with the state to provide home studies and classes to foster parents licensed by the state of Missouri. At first glance, this looks like a pretty straightforward job, however – because of the Christian servants hired by this agency – the job is much more of a mission field than what initially meets the eye.
Potential foster and relative providers are required to meet specific guidelines to be licensed. Some of the guidelines are simple and inexpensive. Others are more challenging and costly. All licensed foster and relative parents are required to have a smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector, and five pound fire extinguisher. These safety items are much more than a luxury, they are necessary to ensure the safety of the individuals living in the home. These necessities come at a cost that presents a challenge to families.
A staff member has been working with her church and her personal insurance company to write grants and provide these potentially lifesaving items to families who are caring for related children. Families have been moved by the generosity and are able to be licensed by being given an item they were unable to afford. The staff member is quick to let them know it is through Christ that all of this possible.
Most of the classes are conducted in churches – churches that generously open their doors to our agency for the purpose of training potential caregivers. Some individuals in the classes have never stepped foot inside the church before.
While there are no church services going on in the classes, seeds are being planted simply by being present in the building. Our trainers have the opportunity to share their experiences in the foster and adoptive area and share how God has impacted their families and their lives. Families learn how to care for victims of abuse and neglect and seeds of faith are planted along the way.
MBCHCFM is a private agency; as such we are afforded opportunities that are not available in a state agency. We are able share our faith openly and without hesitation. Our staff is very quick to let people know that God is working in our lives and He is working in theirs too.
We are able to offer hope through Christ when people are in despair. When families are struggling with adjustment or lives being disrupted, God’s unconditional love and support is the very best thing we can offer.
At first glance, Family Resource Development is about training and paperwork. Spend any amount of time with our staff and it becomes very clear that we are planting seeds of faith in places there was no faith. We are spreading hope and being the hands and feet of the Lord at any opportunity. We are seeking opportunities to serve others and live out the mission of this agency, while providing a necessary service to families in Missouri.
