Christmas Proves God Works Even When Plans Are "Messed Up"

No matter how many times I have seen lives transformed, I am still amazed to see God bless new life, rebuild messed up lives and give hope for tomorrow to those who feel hopeless today.

Dear Friend,

Christmas used to be simple. Didn’t it? Christmas was a quiet time spent with family, a good meal, a real Christmas tree with just a few special presents under it, singing “Silent Night” and “Jingle Bells.” We worshipped at church with people we had known all of our lives and weren’t criticized when we wished people a “Merry Christmas.”

But Christmas has become complicated, hasn’t it? I was reading the other day that there are more parties in the month of December than the rest of the year combined. We have family members who schedule flights home weeks or even months in advance to make sure they can fly on the dates they want at a reasonable cost. We develop lengthy and detailed Christmas lists because our culture has made us feel guilty if we don’t buy gifts for nearly everybody we know.

Even at church it seems like there is some kind of activity, concert, program or party nearly every evening. I actually heard about a Sunday School class at one of our local Baptist churches that has started scheduling their class Christmas party in January because they were never able to find a time in December for it!

I’m not saying that any of those things are wrong, but the more complicated we make Christmas, the more likely it is that our plans will go wrong. Flights may be cancelled; gifts ordered over the internet may not arrive when they should; the turkey may be dry or someone forgets to bring the green bean casserole!

The more I think about Christmas, however, the more I realize that the very first Christmas involved messed up plans. I don’t think Mary planned to get pregnant before marriage. I don’t think Joseph planned to become the step-father of God’s Son. I don’t think any of the people in Palestine planned to make long trips back to their home towns for a census. I don’t think Mary planned to give birth in a stable. These were all things that worked out differently than the people expected – but God blessed them and the world through messed up plans.

Most of the young ladies in our care at The LIGHT House have had their plans messed up. They didn’t plan their pregnancies. They didn’t plan to become mothers before they graduated from high school. They didn’t plan to receive little or no support from their families.

Diana is a young lady whose plans were very messed up. She entered our Pregnancy Services program when she was only 15. Nothing was going according to the plans and dreams that she had for her life. She was pregnant and rejected by her parents. But God is still in the business of taking our messed up plans and working things according to HIS plan and purpose.

One of the greatest joys of my life is seeing God work through our caring, Christian staff at The LIGHT House to perform miracles. No matter how many times I have seen lives transformed, I am still amazed to see God bless new life, rebuild messed up lives and give hope for tomorrow to those who feel hopeless today.

It is your faith – in Christ and in the ministry of The LIGHT House – that is critical to our success. You believe miracles can happen. You believe God can forgive our bad decisions – our sins – and bring something good out of our messed up plans. You believe God can restore broken people and broken relationships. Your gift will  help create a place where these miracles happen. The young ladies in our maternity home desperately need your support. The young mothers and their children in our Outreach Program need you to consider making a financial gift this year.

Because of caring, praying, and giving people, our staff was able to assist Diana to see that God still considers her to be a valuable person. Donors provided the support she needed to carry her baby to term and then give birth to a beautiful baby girl. Their gifts helped us give her the parenting skills she needed. Today, her daughter is thriving. Both Diana and her daughter appear to be happy and well adjusted. Diana has completed high school and has a job that enables her to live independently and raise her daughter.

Even more importantly, we have been able to share the love of Jesus Christ with Diana in both word and action. She has seen the gospel lived out all around her. Without the prayer and financial support of hundreds of people she will never meet, Diana may not have come to understand God’s great love for her.

Two thousand years after Mary and Joseph’s plans were messed up, we now understand how God used that situation to bring about the best thing that has happened in the history of mankind. And while none of the babies born at The LIGHT House will be the Son of God – they can all grow up to become children of God as we continue to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the young ladies in our care.

If you are in a position to help our young mothers-to-be, mothers and babies at this time, thank you. We know from decades of experience that many of our clients begin to see God’s love through the generosity of Christian people at Christmas. You will never fully know how many lives have been transformed by the Gospel you enable us to share.

I thank you in advance for sharing the joy of Christmas with our children. We truly appreciate your support for our ministry  and pray that God will grant you and your family a very happy Christmas season.

Blessings,

Russell L. Martin,

President
