Children’s Mission Organizations, Sunday
School classes and others are always looking for ways to help the
children at Missouri Baptist Children’s Home. Cave Springs Baptist
Church in Neosho created the idea of collecting a “Mile of Pennies” to
be donated to the Children’s Home. They discovered that sixteen
pennies, placed side-by-side, equal one foot. Since there are 5,280
feet in one mile, it takes 84,480 pennies to stretch one mile. That
is $844.80 which can be used to care for hurting children.
Many churches have
developed programs in their missions organizations and Vacation Bible
Schools to have children collect the pennies. Pennies can be collected
at each meeting of the RA’s, GA’s, Acteens, AWANA’s, etc. The “Mile of
Pennies” campaign is a great mission offering project for VBS. Groups
can compete with each other, girls can compete against boys, children
can compete against adults – the possibilities are numerous. The
winner of the contest can win a prize, but the big winners are the
children at Missouri Baptist Children’s Home.
Giving a Mile of Pennies
for MBCH can be a tremendous way to demonstrate to children that any
size gift to God can be blessed for His service.
“Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and
watched the crowd put their money in the temple treasury. Many rich
people threw in large amounts, but a poor widow came and put in two
very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. Calling His
disciples to Him, Jesus said, ‘I tell you the truth, this poor widow
has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out
of their wealth; but she gave out of her poverty.’”
